Viewing and Discussion
November 19, 2019
As an active member of the Theatre Student Association at the University of the Fraser Valley, I organized a screening for students of Akropolis by the famous post modern theatre director Jerzy Grotowski with a discussion by UFV Assistant Professor Shelley Liebembuk.
“Filmed in 1968, Akropolis is considered a particular realization of the poor theatre and is still considered one of the canonical masterpieces of twentieth-century theatre. The actors not only create protagonists who completely negate the presence of the audience through their behaviour, but also evoke an audio-visual environment that generates the impression one is in an alien, hostile world. In this way it became possible to depict on stage the unimaginable reality of the concentration camp.”
